Two months in Tokyo already passed, like the blink of an eye. The novelty of it all generated some sort of inner enthusiasm for the present time and for the future. So remembering my life in Romania sometimes feels like carefully blowing the dust off an old book, in order to read from it a verse I already know by heart. Only once did a memory from Romania really come to mind while I was walking through Shoin jinja during the Bakumatsu Ishin Festival last week. It was not while writing my name and country (in katakana, to the amazement of the shodo lady who offered me the brush), not while listening to the mind blowing taiko drummers, watching the parade, or eating takoyaki. It was during the ceremony preceding the carrying of the Omikoshi, when I thought that a matsuri doesn't actually resemble religious events as I know them - though it takes place at a shrine, there are religious ceremonies, and people are praying. This matsuri especially, because of its theme, actually led my thoughts towards the 'Medieval Festival of Arts and Crafts' in Sighisoara. http://www.welcometoromania.ro/Sighisoara/Sighisoara_Festivalul_Medieval_e.htm Located in the center of the country, in Transylvania, the fortified medieval town of Sighisoara is a UNESCO monument. Because of the Saxon craftsmen and merchants that lived there, in the Middle Ages the town was quite important for central Europe. Amazingly, inside the walls of the small town, the medieval architecture and urban layout are still there, though sometimes not in a very good state. A lot more people than I expected were dressed in medieval clothing. There were several knight orders, which displayed before their stalls medieval weapons. There was an archery practice place for the public, as well as stages in different places of the town, for musicians and actors to perform. There were also stalls selling miscellaneous items, some of which had no connection whatsoever with the festival's theme. There was magic there for me. First of all, because of the sheer beauty of the old buildings. Then because of the music you could sometimes hear in unexpected corners of the city – professional musicians, teenagers with guitars, medieval music or not – l appreciated all of it. I also heard this band http://youtu.be/ltiBezjj7T0 – I stopped for a long time just enjoying the beautiful voice of the young woman and the whistle of the recorder. In the afternoon we visited the Church on the Hill – a gothic style building. My friend and I took a rest, lying on the grass, watching the sky, the trees and the gravestones from a small hill in a quiet corner of the church's cemetery. Later in the evening the crowd started to change. Younger people, playing more amateurish street music. I even accidentally met an old friend I hadn't seen in ages, who was planning to perform later in the evening. I couldn't attend though – my companions wanted to leave. I was also a bit tired. But now, thinking about it, I wish I had drunk three coffees and stayed all night. I also really wanted to see the nocturne parade. I bet I would have loved the lights of the torches...
