I have spent the last three Christmas in the most outrageous places that someone can imagine, three years ago I started it in Norway in one of the northernmost places in Europe called Tromso where I was studying, as you can imagine those were really white Christmas, a hundreds of kilometers from my town you could visit the “real” house of Santa Claus in the North Pole. The other half I travelled along the U.S. East Coast between Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Washington and New York. The 2008/2009 Christmas wasn’t much different, I also spent them in the States, but this time it was quite more chaotic, my friends and I took a car and crossed the United States, route 66 style, from Florida to Las Vegas, we had an accident on the day before Christmas when we were heading Chicago. After fixing the car, our Christmas Eve’s dinner was two cold sandwiches from a 7/11 in a frozen dorm in the University of Chicago. And the last Christmas was the one that I spent in Asia; half of my holidays were in Thailand while the other half were in Tokyo. My Christmas’ Eve was in a train from Bangkok to one of the islands called Koh Samui, quite an experience as well. I had nevertheless for the first time in my life the opportunity to experience the Christmas in Tokyo and I have to say that Japan for not being a Christian country, they celebrate that time of the year like if they were Christians. They decorate the city even more than we do in Europe. You can find amazing illuminations in places like Ginza, Roppongi or the Marunouchi Nakadori Street. If you go to shops like ドンキホーテ、you can buy all kind of articles related to Santa Claus, the reindeers or simply Christmas. Outside Tokyo there are some amazing attractions that are worth to be seen, which is the case of Nabana no Sato, near Nagoya, where more than six million lights create one of the most beautiful artificial landscapes ever imagined. Christmas in Japan might not be as traditional as it is in Europe, but if we talk about decoration it can be one of the most spectacular places in the world.
