:)) This year, just like every year, I enjoyed a “hanami” cherry blossom party in Yoyogi Park. A lot of people outside Japan might get the wrong idea from this word, which literally means “looking at the flowers.” It would certainly be a big mistake to think that we actually sat around admiring the blossoms! In fact, hanami is all about getting together in a big group for a party. No one bothers to look at the flowers at all! As someone who likes both flowers and language (as well as the language of flowers), I became interested in the origins of these Japanese “flower-viewing” parties at which no one actually views the flowers, and decided to do a bit of research. Apparently, hanami started as a springtime banquet, at which people used to put on a feast for the gods of the fields. It was believed that the way the blossoms bloomed could be used to forecast the harvest in store for that year’s crops and rice, and people used to sit under the trees to eat and drink in great volume with the gods. The occasion was governed by the logic of Japanese hospitality, which dictates that everyone should drink themselves into a stupor, and the ethics of the drinker. It all makes sense: That must be why even today people sit under the trees and drink until they forget all about the blossoms and eventually forget even themselves. And this includes foreigners too, who want to experience as many Japanese customs as they possibly can... :))
