*Iniciamo I have a hope for the future, which is actually a kind of obsession: to find a job which can bridge the gap between Japan and Italy/EU. Until when I achieve this, I cannot settle down and put down my roots. Considering how the job market has been recently shrinking both in Europe and in Japan, it may be a pretty ambitious hope. According to the most recent statistics, in Italy the unemployment rate is reported at around 8.5% and in EU it rises to 9.2%. The situation in Japan is slightly better - 5.1% - but for a country which has been used since the WW II to 2-3%, no surprise if the discouragement looks even more widespread. As some businessmen argue, the responsibility may be found in the general fall of consumption. Anyway, I have the feeling the cause is deeper. More and more people are realising life can be lived better and with fewer things. The key to turn economy around may be found in reducing the volume of production, investing in research and boosting innovation for current productions and increasing the offer of “immaterial goods”, such as assistance to the elders, working mothers and needy people, consulting and educational services for foreign people, recreational activities and so on. Speaking about it, last month I set up an organization* for cultural exchange with a group of friends. Our aim is to help Japanese to know Italians better and beyond stereotypes (and vice versa); for this reason, from now on we’ll be giving the chance to Japanese and Italians to perform themselves and speak about their activities. In 2011, although I’ll be still involved in my thesis, my hope is not to “petrify” on papers and books but, in my own small way, to contribute in making Japan and Italy closer and by doing this, to find my place in the world… *Iniciamo #

This year, I spent the winter holidays in a very different way than usual. Because in the beginning of January I had to submit my Master thesis, I was so stressed with this, that I didn’t dare to make any other plans for the winter holiday. But, on December 31st I finished the paper, and for New Year I was free from all the pressure. Since all my friends were out of Tokyo, I decided to spend New Year’s Eve on Skype, with my family. Although it is an interesting experience to make the countdown via internet, my first wish for 2011 is to never have to repeat it again. In Romania, New Year’s Eve is celebrated with friends most of times. Usually, somebody organizes the party at his, or her home, and the rest of people bring food and drinks. Everyone dresses up nicely, and for the entire night they have fun eating, dancing and playing games. On the contrary, I find New Year in Japan to be the quietest time of the year. It almost feels like the flow of time changes for a day: no cars and people passing on the streets, no shops opened... Everyone is in their homes, taking a good rest. I wish that the next New Year’s Eve will be a joyful one! #

This New Year’s Eve, we were planning to go to a shrine (we were thinking of Shimogamo Jinja which is about 40 minutes on foot from our house) and listen to the bell being rung 108 times. We did something similar last year and, despite the cold, we managed to enjoy ourselves and have many fond memories of the event. However, on December 31st it started snowing really heavily and by 8 o’ clock in the evening, it was very cold and slippery outside. In the end, we decided to stay in, have some food and drinks, and celebrate the coming of the new year. I had already cooked some turkey with potatoes in the oven, and my friends had bought mochi rice cakes for dessert. We had also bought some wine and champagne, which we opened at midnight. We stayed up until about 3 a.m. talking and enjoying ourselves. Next day, we went to Matsuo Taisha (a very old and popular shrine) for the “hatsumoude”, i.e. the first shrine visit of the New Year. We bought some omamori (traditional Japanese charms) and ate some delicious food from the many food stalls. Overall, I can definitely say that this has been one of the best New Year’s Eves ever! #

Shortly before the end of the year, we managed the Big Cleaning in my office. Two rooms, about fifteen people, four hours. While we were scratching, polishing, getting rid of all the old stuffs, a girl asked me: «do you do this even in Italy, in order to be ready for the new year’s coming?». Panic. How should I interpret this question? Because the real answer is «no»; cleaning the living room before New Year’s dinner is not the same. So I denied, justifying it by the Spring Cleaning around Easter period and, above all, during a better season for these kind of jobs. Since Tokyo has the privilege of having a beautiful winter, it naively opens his eyes widely in hearing that now in Italy it’s raining or snowing; the real beginning for us is a little bit more far away. Here there isn’t the dark dampness that induces hibernation also in humans, there aren’t stoves and fireplaces which mark the daily waiting for the new cycle of seasons. And for the most waited midnight of the year, there isn’t the overflowing collective euphoria that makes us forgetting the winter for a night (but in which we are back the next morning). This is roughly our mood before January. The Japanese New Year is more serene, thoughtful and, for once, almost exclusively spent with the family. Better focused on what is gonna be, or should be, the new year. The hopes and expectations rise easily the surface like bubbles, because the whole environment works for it. So the minutes pass over the midnight between glasses of sake, small banquets, speeches of encouragement and processions to the temples. But in a simple way, without fireworks and copy-and-paste wishes. They exchange wishes with people close around, while for those who are not part of the group is not necessary to outline relationships at any costs. An homely joy, almost private. #

I didn‘t expected the year 2010 finish so fast, the year which brought me a lot of interesting moments and experiences. And it is time to sum up previous year and make a plan for a new year. Here I would like to tell about my future plans for this year. My biggest wish this year is to start PhD studies in Japan and here are the reasons. First reason, I want to work in high-tech environment and conduct experiments, which could make break through in people life and better understand nature. Second reason, I would like to live again in Japan, meet my friends, experience culture and language. And the last reason is traveling around Japan. This year I would like to spend more time with my friends traveling abroad, making a canoe trips, going to seaside and other interesting stuff. There are also few things I would like to learn better. One of them is Djembe playing and another is my Japanese language classes which I am giving to school children. I feel like I could fulfill my dreams, though 2011 year has just begun. I would like to wish to my family, friends and the rest of the World good and amazing year. Make wish, dream and love. #
