Rebecca Otowa is not a character belonging to the Japanese history, but she is an important figure belonging to my personal history of Japan. History made up by anecdotes, memories, short stories, wrong stories (who knows..) and a little bit invented story. Mrs. Otowa is an American woman, discovered by chance thanks to her book "At home in Japan", an autobiography that goes over thirty years after her marriage to a Japanese boy, at the time her studies mate in Kyoto. Officially her daily life is spent in the role of wife and mother, but for my eyes she is mainly an explorer, a warrior, a master, an artist, a politician and a diplomat. Her words paint each topic following the same pattern: at the beginning, they are biting, angry words, as those who fight against the wind, but soon they turn out sympathetic. Because they are taking the distance from the all the human meanness that make life harder, realizing that they are the same everywhere. As a Western woman who investigates with curiosity, faces, and sometimes challenges a world that is not her own, I found in her words a tone similar to my thoughts. I admire her courage of not having canceled herself out for love or social conformity. She has accepted any new rule, custom, tradition, behavior, just as a new form in which her essence could be contained, for not straggling. A new form, sometimes awkward, painful, sometimes invigorating and calming; a form, however, always lived with the curiosity of the explorer, the stubborn of the warrior, the long term vision of the captain, the astuteness of the politician, the poetry of the artist and the patience of the diplomat. If these are the skills for living away from the own roots, I am also convinced that the real engine for her life is, without any doubt, the love for a man so different from her as an alien, apparently. As we all are among each other.
