I have some very special memories about winter in Japan. The main reason is because here is where I first learned how to ski, while I was living in Sendai. Since then on I went skiing every winter with my friends, and I could literally feel that I got better and better, i.e. less falls and bruises each time. Romania also has mountains, but people there usually play in the snow and go down the ski slope with sleighs. Snowboards and skis are less often seen. Maybe the reason is the fewer people can afford them, as compared to Japan. Also, in Romania the snow is dryer and fluffier than in Japan, which perhaps makes it more suitable for playing with it. I remember that in the beginning I was very puzzled to see people in Japan using umbrellas when outside was snowing. That is until I first walked in the snow without an umbrella in Sendai, and I got wet, just as if outside was raining. In Romania the snow is so dry (or outside is so cold) that the snow falls off the clothes before melting. Since I moved to Tokyo I miss seeing the whole city dressed in white!
