Last year, for the first time in my life, I spent Christmas without my family. When I realized I shouldn’t, it was, unfortunately, too late… Christmas in Japan is no more than gorgeous street illuminations, shopping and a couple of hours spent with your boyfriend, who is usually swamped with work during the year. To be frank, illuminations are beautiful – I really enjoyed South Shinjuku ones – as it is to spend time with your darling, but compared to Italy it’s all too sad and shallow. It’s not just a religious matter. In Italy you are taught since your were a child that Christmas is the day meant to celebrate Christ’s birth and that the night of Christmas Eve is advisable to go to church and thank God for being born and having tried to make this world better. Yet, the essence of Christmas goes by far all this (I do beg all the truly genuine believers’ pardon). Christmas is “family”. Christmas is to feel your heart warm, while outside is freezing. It’s to choose among a bunch of material things which can better express your feelings and find your heart fluttered with excitement imaging your beloved ones doing the same for you. It’s a table dressed in red, my brother eating fried squid rings, card games and laughs, swapping gifts at midnight, a cuddle from my father and my mother’s tired and cheering smile. This year I don’t want to miss a thing of all this.
