Here in Japan I had the opportunity to practice the way of tea (sado), the calligraphy (shodo) and ikebana, but all of them for an extremely limited and discontinuous period of time. So I've never been able to consider them as leisure activities, due to their complexity and deep meanings. Now I'm pleased to know that their description has intrigued my family, encouraging them to practice as well! And I will therefore benefit from it as a reflection! Another activity that I always wanted to explore is the participation in the matsuri (traditional festival) not as a mere observer, but as part of the colorful crowd that dances, sings, laughs, and shakes animating all the events taking place during the year. It is an important aspect of Japanese culture, like the traditional arts, in which the sacred and profane are mixed with great elegance. This is possible because this sacred is different from what we believe has to be in Western culture: here the sacred is very concrete, immanent in all events and objects of everyday life too; a lived sacred. But doing so, the concept of sacred is not reduced in degree, but rather little things of life receive a highest consideration. Therefore is not just because of appearance that the Sanma Matsuri (a kind of small pike) seems to play, sing and dance more venerably than a simple feast of fish, and I wish to be able to join it one day.
