Three years ago I read Haruki Murakami’s “Norwegian Wood”. Back then, I couldn’t make a clear image of the story’s setting because I didn’t know Japan and Tokyo that much. But last year I realized that the university in the story is actually my university, Waseda. Even more, the boys dormitory I walk by every day on my way to school, Wakey Jyuku, is the dormitory in the story. This makes the place I live and study now feel so important and so much more tangible for the family and friends in Romania. I would have even more reasons to brag about if Haruki Murakami would take the Nobel Prize for Literature! Romania also has many good writers and probably the one whose stories can be enjoyed the most even by foreigners is Mircea Eliade. His most famous novel is “Maitreyi”, an autobiographic love story with a Bengali girl. What makes it special is not only the beauty of the story, but also the fact that this girl became a writer herself and wrote a reply-novel to Eliade’s book entitled “It Does Not Die. A Romance”. Mircea Eliade was also a historian of religion and a philosopher whose theories are influential even at present. I think his works are definitely worth reading for anyone who enjoys literature!
