According to the conventional view, I ought to feel a strong sense that I am in Asia whenever I walk the streets of the city or look at the faces of the people around me on the train. Probably the same feeling should assail me whenever I see people chewing gum with their mouths open, when I eat rice, or when I see the jet-black hair of the women, with its beautiful silky sheen . . . I should be struck by the fascination people have with white skin, or the mountains of bicycles piled up outside the stations . . . But the fact is that I never feel this way in my daily life. I prefer to think of myself as living a life that is very similar to those of the people around me. I am living in a certain location in the world (or universe), but I prefer to think of that place not as “Japan” or “Poland,” or as“Europe” or “Asia,” but rather as a space that lies beyond such simplistic concepts and fixed ideas—a place that transcends borders and boundaries. Can anyone really point to a given place and pronounce with conviction that “this is Asia”? Who (if anyone) has the right to say? “Asia” is not a clearly defined term either geographically or racially, and its borders shift regularly depending on the perspective of the person using the word. At the risk of oversimplification: If I interpret events in the world around me based on an image of myself as a European, do I not run the risk of stumbling into simple Orientalism (as defined by Edward Said)? As Gayatri Spivak has suggested, confronted with stereotypical discours, perhaps we would be better to look at Asia not as a single, unified entity, but as a diverse place characterized by pluralities and discontinuities (“Other Asias”). It does sometimes occur to me that Japan is an Asian country. But only when watch the news or look at a map of the world. Photo: In an Indian slum
