I have to say that if at the beginning it seemed to me very evident which are the tipically Asian aspects of Japan, now, trying to write, I realise I'm quite embarassed. I arrived in Japan without a clear immage of how expect it but wanting to discover it living in it. Now, after 8 months, I start to have a picture of it, really broadly...an impressionist painting! Before starting to tell you the "colors" of my painting, I have to say that if I should resume Japan with one word, that would be "paradox" so the colors of this painting are really contrasting. Here they are the colors of my painting: manga, kimono, pagode, shrines, geisha, salary man in suits, Japanese gardens, zen gardens, hyper-crowded subways, skyscrapers, small houses with blue roofs, tatami, futon, tea ceremony, sushi, mobiles connected to internet, bright fashion clothes, family mart always opened with everything inside, shintoist lucky charm... I know more traditional things come from China and those more modern come from western world but everything adapted so that it becamed just Japanese. The colors of my impressionist painting are eye-catching for an European because they are very different to what we are used to. What leaves me embarassed is: if from a side I know historical origins of some things, to the other side, after had lived in Japan, I don't manage any more to put in boxes things as Asian, western or just Japanese. It's incredible, thinking that, when you are quiet in Italy, all those with "almond eyes" are all the same and you call them "Chinese"! For sure I know one thing: the district where I lived till December in Tokyo, Ekoda, seemed to me really Asian; Tsukuba, where I live now, doesn't seem to me Asian at all; but if I should explain why I would start to mumble something about small shopscolorful, close one to each other, about food smells...but without arriving to a real point. Something definetly Asiatic of Japan is the diet based on rice and the fact that we eat with chopsticks....then? any suggestion is accepted!
