One of the famous things about Japan—not as famous perhaps as geisha, samurai, or manga, but still well known around the world—is the almost worshipful love the Japanese have for their cherry blossoms.. If you’re in Japan at this time of year, it is one tradition you definitely shouldn’t miss! To start with, there are sakura, (cherry) trees everywhere. As the first buds emerge, there is a flurry of activity all around as people hurry to make plans. And it’s not just the cherries: little groups of people blossom too, gathering on large plastic tarpaulins for their hanami picnics, their shoes left in neat lines next to the sheets and with every comfort provided. These parties take place even on weekdays, often in gardens by office buildings. Personally, I was lucky that the cherry blossom season happened to coincide with the week when my boyfriend was visiting Japan, so that I could enjoy both the cultural and the romantic aspects of the occasion. On the Saturday, we went to Yoyogi Park in Tokyo, with our packed lunches, some cans of limited-edition ”sakura" beer, and a camera. The whole park was full of those plastic sheets again, but the crowds were much louder and more playful than during the week. It reminded me a lot of "Pasquetta*" in Italy: food, friends, games on the grass, and lots of fun! *Easter Monday (the day after Easter), which is a national holiday in Italy. After Easter lunch with the family, friends go out into the country or the hills, where they relax together on the grass over a picnic or barbecue, playing games and strumming on guitars.
